Anthologies and roses

I'm reading up on emblem books. Moseley's A Century of Emblems starts off with this beautiful line:

With whatever care the flowers are cut, anthologies can only disappoint; some readers do not see in them the blooms they expected, others regret the severance of what is there from its native stem.
